could the Patta x Nike Air Max 1 “Monarch” be one of the hottest sneaker releases of the entire year? We certainly think so. Made in collaboration with the Dutch brand, it’s releasing this week alongside a film series titled The Wave.
From a distance, this Air Max 1 looks like an OG colourway from back in the day. With a two-tone palette that gives us major retro vibes, it’s only when you take a closer look that you’ll notice the wavy orange suede mudguard that wrap around the leather and mesh base. The rest of the shoe is left in a crisp all-white tone for an ultra crisp aesthetic that will work with any fit you throw at it this season. A complementary Nike Swoosh shoots across the lateral and medial sidewalls, with an even small one adorning the toebox.
Broken into four films, they explore the themes of freedom, creativity, and truth within the Patta community. Nodding to some of the areas that the brand have drawn influence from throughout the years, including fashion, music, sport, and personal style.
“Since I started making films and photography, my work has always been about finding ways to show love to people that look like me.” discusses Mahaneela who directs the movies. “Patta a great example of how creativity can manifest into authentic relationships and give back to the people and places we are from. For numerous young Black and brown filmmakers, Steve McQueen and his legacy have been somewhat of a north star for us. To be able to collaborate with him on this project, which for me is a love letter to my fellow creatives of color, has been unforgettable.”
